The narrator describes episodes in her childhood of how her mother used to be and how completely different she was compared to her aunt Lucy. Her mother and sister were polar opposites: they lived their lives differently. The narrator is caught I between these two diverse understandings of living. As the title indicates the novel is concerning the narrators’ mother and sister. The aunt has never found love, but she has found a mutual understanding with her husband William. “William and I – I wouldn’t call us happy. But we had an understanding” (My mother and Sister p. 3. l.10-101).
